Criteria for Transfer of Math courses into NCCC

The following represent a series of guidelines for use in evaluating Math courses for transfer into NCCC from colleges other than CT Community Colleges (for transfer of Courses from other CT Community Colleges, Common Course Numbering designates what the course transfers in as; for any course prior to Common Course Numbering, MATYCONN’s website, http://www.matyconn.org, provides link via “Math Issues” which delineates what “old” course numbers at other CT Community Colleges are equivalent to under Common Course Numbering – “Common Course Equivalencies”):

  1. Course content (topics covered in course as described in course syllabus/description on website of transferring college): Math 095 Elem Algebra requires coverage of Quadratic Equations, Algebraic Fractions/Rational Expressions, Systems of Equations, Graphing Linear Equations; Math 135 Contemporary Math requires coverage of Set Theory, Logic, Algebra, Geometry, Probability, Statistics; Math 137 Interm Algebra requires coverage of Exponential Functions, Logarithmic Functions, Complex Numbers, Absolute Value & Radical Equations, Graphing Quadratic Functions.

  2. Credits of transferring course (must be equal to or greater than NCCC course’s # of credits);

  3. Grade of transferring course (must be C- or above);

  4. Pre-requisite of transferring course (must require same course as pre-requisite as NCCC course does – measured by topics covered as opposed to course name/title): Math 095 Elem Algebra requires pre-requisite equivalent (in course content/topics covered) to Math 075 PreAlgebra; Math 135 Contemporary Math requires pre-requisite equivalent to Math 095 Elem Algebra; Math 137 Interm Algebra requires pre-requisite equivalent to Math 095 Elem Algebra;

  5. Course which transferring course serves as pre-requisite to (must be same course which NCCC course would serve as pre-requisite to – measured by topics covered as opposed to course name/title): Math 095 Elem Algebra must serve as a pre-requisite to an equivalent course (in course content/topics covered) to Math 137 Interm Algebra; Math 137 Interm Algebra must serve as a pre-requisite to an equivalent course to Math 186 PreCalculus (College Algebra & Trigonometry);

  6. Name/title of transferring course is irrelevant (unless Common Course Numbering situation is in effect) since there are no national standards (especially for courses below PreCalculus or Statistics) for what constitutes a particular titled Math course (eg. Elem Algebra at some colleges is a hybrid of PreAlgebra & the 1st half of Elem Algebra and hence is not equivalent to our Elem Algebra since it does not cover all our topics; Interm Algebra at many 4 yr colleges is simply their lowest level Remedial Math course and may in fact be equivalent to our Elem Algebra; Contemporary Math is a title that is used to describe a variety of Math courses at other colleges, many of which bear no resemblance, & hence no equivalency, to NCCC’s Contemporary Math).
